It wouldn't hurt right now, someone to lay down the law.
They all knew how the tyres would be, if their car destroys them it's their fault.
Pre season was the time to discuss this.
I agree that slow racing is not what f1 is about, but it feels unfair to change the rules now.
Perhaps if they want to do it they could give the teams the new tyres info and set a date, spa maybe, to give them all time to redevelop. But this still feels daft as I type it.
If it's not what people want, change it next year and not now.

Whilst I agree that the teams shouldn't dictate it, and they should cope with what they have, that isn't really the problem here is it? It's fine saying the teams should just deal with it, but if the result of the teams dealing with it is 4-5 stop races and everyone driving slowly then fuck that.

Coulthard: "I couldn't go any faster. Not because I was having to manage the tyres, but because I physically could not go any faster within the grip the tyres generated."
Hamilton: "I can't drive any slower."

This makes me a sad panda.

But this is just one race. It doesn't mean the same will happen in future races. Yes a mistake was made, but that doesn't mean the rest of the season should be affected by this one event, does it?

I agree, I don't want 4-5 stop slow races. But I also don't want to see teams dissappear from contention because the racing was deemed too dull.
Hopefully the change isn't too radical, hopefully those who handle tyres well still do and hopefully they have strong pace after they can push harder.
I have no reason to believe this won't be the case. But it's still a fear worth voicing.
When do we get the new tyres? Is it Monaco? Possibly not the best circuit to show the difference.

I thought Canada.

Schumacher did a 4-stopper at the French GP in 2004, nobody complained about that.

Yeah but that was pure epicness/class from Schumacher and Ferrari. That was because they pushed the car to the freaking limit so he could make that strategy work. Now the drivers can't even push during a 4 stop strategy!!!

I beg to differ...

Quoting myself from the Spain race thread

kals wrote:
...compare the race pace and strategy to 2012. In 2012 we had a titanic struggle between Alonso and Maldonado pushing as hard as they could to win. Alonso finish time in 2013 was a mere 7 seconds slower than Maldonado in 2012. So I'd say Alonso was pushing pretty hard today, compared to everyone else.

2012
1 - Maldonado - 1:39:09.145
2 - Alonso - +3.195

2013
1 - Alonso - 1:39:16.596

So Alonso was 4 seconds slower in 2013 than his finish time in 2012. I'm not 100% sure but I think he made 1 more stop in 2013 than in 2012. That would suggest he was pushing harder in 2013 than 2012.

Well given that there weren't some drastic changes throughout the winter in technical terms you would assume the cars would be faster this year. Not saying they didnt push, but the majority of the time they where saving the tyres. Best example was with GP2 (same tyres) where they were saving tyres throughout the whole stint and started pushing in just the last 5-6 laps. I like Pirelli, but they need to have a better balance. Guys that want to push need to be able to do that, now the only working strategy seems to be the tyre saving strategy. Aggressive drivers are punished extremely with the current tyres.

The FIA steps in and restores order. Do not expect major changes.

But it is good they are looking at the problems that caused some tyres to fail for Massa/DiRiesta recently. That change we can surely all get on board with?

I thought the changes for Canada were to stop the tyres failing to easily when they come in contact with debris. I was under the impression that compound changes for performance issues were due for Silverstone.

Also, the FIA quote is hilarious.

Quote:
The rule states: "Tyre specifications will be determined by the FIA no later than 1 September of the previous season. Once determined in this way, the specification of the tyres will not be changed during the championship season without the agreement of all competing teams."

Yeah well they were still playing with compounds during February testing this year. So this rule is soooo important that they were only 7 months late with it? I also imagine the rule was written around the Bridgestone era of having tyres which were a 100% known quantity.

How about we bring in another manufacturer? Let's bitch about that, instead.

Somewhat unrelated but wasn't sure where else to post this...

Costco offering this $115,000 full-size F1 simulator in UK

Image

Quote:
For video game enthusiasts who can't stand the thought of playing a racing game on a single television screen, using a standard controller and (gasp!) sitting on a couch, there are plenty of realistic racing simulators out there. While better simulators usually include a trio of monitors, a racing chair and appropriate steering wheel and pedals, Costco has what could be the ultimate racing simulator for Formula One fans in the UK with deep pockets and a desire for a life-like gaming experience.

Costing a mere 90,000 British pounds (roughly $136,000), Costco UK sells a simulator mounted to a life-size F1 car that includes plenty of composite, carbon fiber and alloy. It even has full brakes, wheels and tires. The price includes set up and training, but don't expect to pick one up in addition to a 10-pound package of bacon and a 40-count package of toilet paper, since it takes about 12 to 18 weeks to deliver. All that is missing to get this thing on a real track are the engine and transmission. As for the simulation aspect, this system uses three 23-inch thin film transistor (TFT) screens, an Intel Core i7 processor and a five-speaker surround sound system.

I'm very happy with Honda's return. I would have hoped that they would have stayed on as an engine manufacturer even when they left as a team. Same obviously for BMW and Toyota.

With Honda entering, Toyota must be around the corner too somewhere.

There have been rumors for years about Hyundai. Can see them join as well.
Toyota has Le Mans.

still wondering if any American brand will enter F1. Or will they go to the IRL?

What American brand? Ford? Chevy? Psion? Buick? Can't see any American brand entering.
