At such a low starting price, I think it's not real. |

38cms seems realistic for an F1 steering wheel of that era. The concerning thing is that there is no certificate of authenticity, no way to prove it is a genuine article. Then again I know the Cotswolds and know there are a few specialist car dealers and garages there which have in the past run historic race cars including F1 machinery. So it could be the real deal. |

I contacted the seller about the steering wheel and this is the response I received Quote: i brought it as part of a job lot from an ex-Alfa F1 mechanic about 10 years ago. I'm having a clearout of my collection to make way for a couple of new pieces, so this one is up for sale. From memory, there are some details stamped into the back of the steering wheel.

Yeah that's a good idea. When they aren't able to pass with Indycars they sure will be able to do it with F1. |

3800mm is like a normal car steering wheel...no way that was used in an F1 car. |

Ordinarily I'd agree, but with KERS, DRS and Pirelli that's a whole different ball game these days. Chris Pook knows what he's doing too, I'd put more faith in him than some flash in the pan US promoters.... |

That discussion over that plausible Alfa Romeo F1 steering wheel reminded me of Pawn Stars...."Hey, Chum Lee, call Dana Linett, the specialist in old artifacts" |

Woodski wrote: 3800mm is like a normal car steering wheel...no way that was used in an F1 car. I didn't think it seemed unrealistic at first, but I've just had a pretend drive with a 30cm ruler, and remembered sitting in both a 1965 BRM P261 (different era I know) and a 1977 Renault RS01 (again, slightly different time) and both weren't exactly spacious even for a (then) 17 year old weighing about 60kg ... so I imagined an extra 8cm on the side of the ruler and it definitely seemed a bit big. This is probably the most scientific test ever done. |

Woodski wrote: 3800mm is like a normal car steering wheel...no way that was used in an F1 car. 3.8m seems slightly excessive, lol. :-P Here are some photos I took from the Donington collection. A few steering wheel shots in there. I wish I had held a tape measure against them now... http://www.flickr.com/photos/robdunckley/sets/72157625729421180/ But personally I also think 38cm is a bit too big for a late 70s F1 steering wheel. |

'Lewis signed his contract at a time when the economic climate was significantly different' - Ron Dennis. Interesting comment. |
