All the people who complain about the sound are *really* going to be hating on Formula E. :p

One of the important elements of this new engine is recovering energy from the turbocharger exhaust (the MGU-H part). As the exhaust is where a lot of an automobile's noise comes from, I can't help but think that it's this critical element that is playing a large part of reducing the noise. As well as changing the *character* of the noise. (Typical turbos of past racing didn't have an MGU-H to recover exhaust energy... as I understand it the old F1 turbos had wastegates and Champ / Indy cars use pop-off valves, neither of which would reduce waste energy at all.)

I'd love to get confirmation one way or another by somebody more technical in the know, but my hunch is that the new noise is, indeed, the nature of the technology involved. If that's the case, I hope that F1 doesn't do anything silly and artificial to try and counteract the lack of noise. Anything in that direction would probably make the sound worse.

That's my understanding too. Anything which uses exhaust gas from the engine - turbo, MGU-H, removes energy from what comes out of the back pipe, and therefore noise. This is almost certainly why Indycars are still louder than F1.

I'm cool with engine noises, what I can't stand are vuvuzelas and horns in stadiums

Funny you should say that: Melbourne considering ditching F1 for IndyCar

There are other issues here, as our government just voted down renewing the contract for 5 years recently, and IndyCar would cost 8x less a year than F1.

Well yes I was about to post how ridiculous it would be to ditch F1 over engine noise, particularly when the green lobby have been using noise pollution as one of their main issues to try and get the event cancelled. Not that it's ever got anywhere, thankfully.

The new engines are at the very beginning of a multiple year ruleset, there's no need to panic yet.

And if that's melbourne's attitude? Fuck em, we're quieter now, lets go back to Adelaide.

Or, you know, Bathurst. Ha. Ha. I am funny.

Go to Phillip Island instead.

Nah, still a "normal" road, at least from google maps.

Phillip Island would be better though.

That would be pretty tast but I'm sure the FIA would have issues with the way the track loops around on itself and an out of control car could potentially land back on the track in traffic, so they'd want to put a wall up at turn 1 and then you suddenly have a 200mph corner pointing straight at a wall so a chicane will appear and blah blah blah fia safety features blah...

I like Philip Island.
So no to F1 ;)

There is a built-up traffic island in the middle of the road, as well as on the previous chicane - I'm assuming they wouldn't be removable, so wouldn't it leave the track too narrow? I'm pretty sure they used to use all four lanes.

Edit: Dammit. It won't work. Just click on the link below. No time to get it right now.

That isn't one of the Indycar live broadcast cameras, Its a Go-Pro put over the visor by Simon Pagenaud to get some shots during practice. He's posted a few videos from that sort of angle before.

FOM do need to start making more use of the Helmet-Cam they do have though.

I still think a FIA'ed Phillip Island would still be on the top 5 of Formula 1 circuits on the calendar.

I dread to think what traffic before/after the race would be like though, at least with MotoGP most of the fans seem to be on bikes, which helps

Unless you add a screamer pipe to the wastegate, then it makes a lot of noise.

yeah, the roads on the island are pretty small also, but they use an extra set of lines to separate the bridge+other roads into 2 lanes each way, for big events

looks like São Paulo will not build a new start/finish line at Interlagos, they'll rebuild the pitlane and keep as it is

Thank goodness! A circuit with a moved start/finish line is always going to be a strange thing that one has to get used to.
