Where do these high speeds of the latest years come from BTW? Are the engines much more powerful than, say, the V10 era? Or is it the additional electric power from the hybrid? Or just the cars/components getting better and more aerodynamic?

Simply, these new engines have significantly more torque than their predecessors, so even though they have less horsepower, the torque means they accelerate better. 8 speed gearboxes help too, 8th gear is a low ratio overdrive gear that gets them good acceleration.

Then you have the ERS and DRS as well.

:8: 378kph is outrageous in a street circuit. Or anywhere really.

If they go ahead with the new Curva Grande kink, we could approach the 400kph :o

Talking about young "superstar" drivers doing stupid moves, I remember that this reckless driving from Ralf Schumacher at Monza in 1997 owned him a reprimand from the stewards (although it wasn't deliberate, more due to lack of awareness):

The irony is that that fiddly chicane probably provided more action and passing than the current easier chicane does.

I visited the track yesterday, was in Milano and it was on my way back to the airport so I set aside a couple hours to get a look around.

Awesome!
I'm going to be in Milan mid-September! Do you think I'll also be able to enter like you did (I'm checking online and it seems like yes).
Do you have any tips for a guy who's going to be with 2 girls on how to convince/escape them and go see this? :p

Depending on the context of being 'with 2 girls', skipping the GP entirely might be worth considering

: the entrance is free for all, it's a park and there were families routinely cycling on the infield area and onto the old oval.

If you arrive by car, just go towards the first chicane (near the swimming pool and camping) and you'll find a free car park in the grass then it's a short walk to the entrance tunnel under the main straight.

There's a fair bit if walking if you really want to see all the corners and grandstands, so bring some water and maybe the girls can wait at the bar near the car park : -p but it's all nice and quiet as long as there's no racing !!

There didn't seem to be much to do around the city of Monza neat the circuit, but don't take my word on it.

Ah one more thing, do not attempt to get gas at an automated station if there's no attendant. It ate my 20euros and gave me an error coupon to use within two weeks : -p

Mags cleared to race.

But I wonder if the team would have played safe if Ocon was still their 3th driver...

The British GP and Monza won't collide, MotoGP starts after the F1 race is done.

Has an F1 team ever been known to not talk up their chances?

Considering the current engine regs and development freeze I consider Mclaren/Honda's improvement in form in a year and a half pretty damn impressive. They're the only engine supplier making any dent in the status quo atm.

If you have the worst engine on the grid, it is not that difficult to make more progress than others ;)
