www.cambridge-news.co.uk Quote: BREAKING: Formula One racing driver seriously injured after crash with lorry at Duxford airfield
A driver has today suffered serious injuries after a Formula One racing car was in collision with a lorry at Duxford airfield. The female driver of the Marussia F1 car was taking part in a Formula One testing day on the runway at the Imperial War Museum site when the crash happened just before 9.30am. A Cambridgeshire police spokesman said: “A racing car and a lorry crashed at low speed.” More details to follow. |

Low speed is still 20/30mph. In an open single seater racer, I wouldn't want to hit a lorry at that speed. It sounds serious, and the fact that an hour has passed (almost) with only sketchy details from a journalist is worrying. |

ITV reporting 'serious injuries' as well. http://www.itv.com/news/anglia/update/2012-07-03/f1-car-crashes-at-duxford/ |

I know Duxford, so I can picture the location pretty clearly. |

Tobias wrote: you can blame the 'remote' location for that though. Duxford isn't hugely remote. It's right next to a motorway The Air Ambulance is what worries me. You don't call one of those unless it's serious. |

That's right. When there was a fatal crash at the air show some wreckage hit some cars on the motorway. |

damn, doesn't sound good. It also sounds like a very weird incident/crash. You'd imagine nothing much can happen in straight line tests... |

What the fuck was a lorry doing on the circuit? |

I don't think it had anything to do with that. The incident didn't happen during the straight-line test itself. It was probably on a taxi way (the pits for the test) and the driver was returning to it (hence the low speed report). Suddenly the throttle jammed open. |

It still shouldn't be anywhere near where the car is because these sort of things can happen. |

I cannot fully agree with you there. In such a test the truck is basically the pitbox. EDIT: BBC also reporting what other sites do: 'serious injuries'.
The UK definition covers injury resulting in a person being detained in hospital as an in-patient, in addition all injuries causing: fractures, concussion, internal injuries, crushings, burns (excluding friction burns), severe cuts, severe general shock which require medical treatment even if this does not result in a stay in hospital as an in-patient.[2]
|

it is very concerning that in the statement there was no mention that she was talking over the radio. Usually they do mention that. |

Quote: Although the full severity of the injury is not yet known, Sky Sports F1 sources have confirmed that De Villota required assistance from the emergency services in the wake of the crash and that Maria was unable to extract herself from the car after the collision. According to eye-witnesses, De Villota crashed into a stationary vehicle after locking up her rear-tyres and losing control of the Marussia whilst returning to the pits after completing a single installation lap. http://www1.skysports.com/formula-1/new ... in-testing |
