KMag pretty much admitted he was hoping Pérez would see him and move out of the way.

It's pretty clear Perez saw him, but at the same time I don't think KMag was any reasonable way alongside at that point. I think Perez probably assumed that they would back off because it's lap 1 at Monaco, and passing up the hill never works unless you're much further up the side of a car than that.

Ultimately, it looks like misplaced trust in 'tradition' vs the guy with the worst spatial awareness on the grid.

I don't think the stewards will take that well :slaphead:

Are they completely restarting the race like the first start didn't happen? Why is Sainz allowed to restart third? I ask because red flags on the first lap historically used to mean that the race was completely restarted, i.e. the first start didn't happen. That is not what they have done for years.

So if this is not a complete "restart", why is Sainz allowed to restart third when he was effectively last after they had already completed the first sector before the red flag was shown?

When was the last lap 1 red flag we've had? I don't recall any where the starting order was at the point of the red and not the same starting order.

Silverstone a couple of years ago?

That's exactly my point though, I find it very hard to believe they can't "accurately determine the running order" when the red flag is shown part way round the first lap. If you want to restart the race with the original grid order, then restart the race. In other words, completely start again and effectively throw the first start out.

Sky just answered the question, SC line 2 is what defines the order, which is at the end of the pits.

You know, I'm fed up with Magnussen. But looking at his onboard, Perez could easily have held his line (through the meandering beau rivage) and thus avoided contact. Don't get me wrong, Kevin was sticking his nose where it didn't belong, but I'm not so sure it's a slam dunk affair.

On first viewing, I put 100% of the blame on Mags, but you're right. Perez sees him in the mirrors and could have given a little bit more room. I still think Magnussen should back out, but it's avoidable from both drivers.

We’re acting like we’d know what to do when an F1 car is in our blind spot at 250km/h.

Magnussen was going into a wedge that was always going to close. Perez saw him but there’s no way he can make a judgement on what the car in the blind spot was going to do. Only a psychopath would drive into it. Anyone driving into it is on a hiding to nothing.

Look at how conservative drivers in the F2 and F3 race, who weren’t in the top 15 were. They knew driving into those gaps is useless.

Same story can be said for the Alpines later in the lap.

The reasoning is that not everybody had concluded the first sector when the red flag was given, therefore they couldn't use it as a reliable source of the field order.

A 0 stop race around Monaco. This could be unprecedentedly dull

I think everyone swapped onto the tyre they didn't start with. So for the medium runners it will be a game of hanging on.

Yeah, I know he's mad and I don't care. I do not care. I did not care then. I do not care now. I'm here to race him.

Brundle said they were told both compounds can do the full race. Obviously the mediums are not ideal, but they can do it.
