so my first assumption was right, the car barely touched halo, butthe protection worked properly because the wheel is the main concern

now that the cars are safe drivers are prone to drive like meatheads? maybe with Strulovich in a better car

I wouldn't say it 'barely touched' the halo - it hit the halo with enough force that the suspension snapped, and in the upward direction that the suspension is designed to act against.

The replay angles are a bit odd though - in the camera from La Source it really does look like he skims over the front without even going near the cockpit, but this other one from the STR shows the rotation that the other does not.

Perfect positioning by Vettel there. Cut off any attempt by Lewis to re-overtake and gave just enough room for Ocon but not enough to allow him to mount a proper overtake attempt. Vettel did all of that without making multiple moves.

It's not often that Vettel gets racecraft right, but he really did there. No blue balls in the red car.

except ofcourse the big swerve to the right once past Hamilton that could have lead to them both touching, and that little extra to the right when he noticed Ocon.

Clean move, no arguments there, but definitely multiple moves.

4-wide action in F1 :8:

This is the kind of picture people will bring up a couple decades when in rose-tinted glasses mode about how it was "so much better before". Between the battle and the immense passionate crowd behind, you'd think like it's the best sport ever... unless you actually watched the race.

That's an amazing photo. Looks like a pre-planned marketing shot.

Shame it isn't very indicative of modern F1...

don't tell that to Liberty or they'll use to create an illusion of AMAZING RACING ACTION, pretty much like Antti Kalhola does with his compilations

Between that photo and Alonso's crash Liberty have all the marketing material they need. No one will ever know it was a shitty race

The picture(s) of Alonso's smash and this one are pretty great photos though. Any marketing team worth their salt would use them.

New angle from Leclerc's car. This one makes it look like the wheel grazed the Halo and would've missed Leclerc's head if it wasn't there.

Is this one a second camera angle from the same camera? This clearly shows the wheel hitting the Halo, and it is a bit closer than I thought. Why don't they show these camera angles live?

It's a 3d camera that they fit to some cars, so I guess it's amazing odds to have it on Leclerc's! They don't ever show these live; I think the technology isn't advanced enough to render it in real time.

Again, though, it does show how some angles really make it seem milder than the other angles do. In this tweeted video they have a zoomed and stabilised shot from Hartley's car which shows that there were two hard hits - one on the engine cover (which is what jolts Leclerc's hands and the camera) and one on the halo itself.

Just look at how much the halo is flexing in this shot 8O

I think that's more fisheye camera distortion than the halo actually flexing - otherwise the reflection of the halo would mirror the angle.

That and/or the antenna in front of it making an optical illusion even stronger.

I think Leclerc's hands might have been in danger without the halo if he kept them high and steering wheel turned. His left hand especially, as it would be higher when turning right and how Alonso's car was moving.

edit: if FIA simulates this properly, we wouldn't have to speculate so much. If they don't, then maybe they are the ones who like to give the illusion it is life saver here. If it really is, then cool, show simulation, it would only underline the benefits.

I think the halo has proven its use. It was close. There should not even be a discussion if in this particular case it would have made a difference. Fact is that it was very close, and we don't want them to race without halo and see if it can be even closer next time.
