Last weekend RTL had 7.71 million viewers, while sky Deutschland with 2.7 million subscribers had around 330.000 viewers plus a bunch of people watching the HD channel. That's not a lot, but it's the second most watched sport on sky behind the Bundesliga.

how many channels do bbc run? Surely they can get rid of a few of the multi channels

BBC Two
BBC Three
BBC Four
cBeebies
cBBC
BBC News
BBC Parliament

Plus local stations and overseas channels. God knows how many of them there are.

Not counting HD and red button services, they have 8.

And yes, they can get rid of some.

They'll probably have to at some point.

The people who talked about merging Three and Four clearly haven't foreseen how daft it would be to have Family Guy and Snog, Marry, Avoid interspersed on the schedule with documentaries on Mozart.

It only costs about £10 million\year to broadcast, it really wouldn't save that much money.

Plus I think Parliament is a pretty useful service actually. May be underused, but pretty vital for showing people that their politicians actually are doing something.

Why not? We currently have F1, Coronation Street and Antiques Road Show on BBC One, and those don't exactly fit together do they? Whilst it sounds ridiculous the way you word it, that isn't how it'd work anyway. Programs are scheduled together for a reason. It's why you got a bunch of comedy on BBC2 together on Thursday nights - that was the night they were popular. You wouldn't have Family Guy splitting the classical music documentaries because they wouldn't be on the same night.

It isn't about the raw cost, but rather the viewers per cost numbers. BBC Already said that whilst F1 was expensive (most expensive sport they cover iirc), it provides the most number of viewers for the money spent. Meanwhile Wimbeldon was broadcast when people were at work, and relatively cost a lot for the ones who watched it.

I agree that BBC Parliament isn't a bad idea, however it is a significant amount of money. It could easily be put into BBC News, given that rolling news is actually worthless filler content until a massive terrorist attack occurs. I turned on BBC News yesterday and it had 4 hours of Amy Winehouse death still on, just split up by weather.

Exactly. Kill BBC3, kill BBC4, kill CBBC, kill CBeebies, and merge all the best content into the two main channels. If BBC2 is going to be deprived of content to the point where they may have to reintroduce the test card during the night, then this is the best way to replenish it.

And while they're at it, they can stop spending £17 million for untested talent shows.

That is sort of what they used to do "back in the day"; a picture-in-picture for Parliament on the news channel.
