Well no Paul, you're not entirely right. There was tarmac on the outside of Paddock Hill bend, but there wasn't that much. Not much at all.

I'm late to the party but for once you're wrong there was loads haha.

It wasn't laid as a runoff though, it formed part of the old circuit, but instead of pulling the banks back (which wasn't possible easily in the 70's), they tightened up the corner apex.

I find it 'disturbing' that Kimi's helmet this years looks like the one of Grosjean last year, and vice versa.

As long as they don't trade their performances it's ok for me lol

It's a very nice helmet, the stylized "v" reminds me of Jacques Villeneuve's helmet. Also I like the black and white style. Good job!

Yeah, I know he's mad and I don't care. I do not care. I did not care then. I do not care now. I'm here to race him.

Stuff that happened within my eyesight at testing yesterday ...

Van der Garde did mildly bin it coming out of the final turn onto the pit straight, probably little to no damage but in testing they tend to take the car back anyway ...

Gutierrez and (whoever was in the Toro Rosso, I never did check) had nearly identical understeer induced offs at turn 5 as the track dried.

While everyone else was struggling to make it round turn one on Inters, Lewis got to the apex first using medium slicks. Mildly impressive. About the only real observation I made trackside ...

Will post literally "some" photos later, although I spent most of the time focussing on the mountains and reporting tyre compounds back to Autosport Live, which if you were following, I was the roving man and responsible for terrible quality camera phone photographs of vehicle recoveries. Actual photographs should be mildly better ...

No, that one would have been taken from the media centre, I was just on a general admission as I was only there for the day and don't actually work for Autosport ... I did get in to the paddock, but to have an argument with the circuit officer about his policy on bicycles that isn't stated at any point on any card, poster or sign, or on the conditions of entry. I was later asked how I got to be in his office (nice building, a typical Spanish casa) in the centre of the restricted area. A car was then ordered to take me back to the gate, which was slightly annoying as I'd been nowhere near the gate when I got in to the paddock, but never mind, the driver was a nice guy. Despite everyone speaking English, I insisted on arguing in Spanish ... in reality, this probably frustrated them even more because my language skills are passable but not fluent, and they would probably have preferred to speak in Catalan.

I was in place to get a picture of the stopped Mercedes but had no battery on my phone, being between one of my appearances as MacGyver siphoning electricity from hand dryers or the outlets for ice cream stalls (closed) ... I didn't see the point in taking one with my camera as it was only really of (even passing) interest to anyone reading Autosport Live at the time, rather than something that needed a DSLR record a day later, for which there are accredited photographers and almost every other spectator at the track who also owned a DSLR. Likewise the Force India stoppage that curtailed the day, I didn't really see the point as it was clearly a fuel stoppage and Live were going to close the article in 2 minutes anyway.

hmmm, isn't this the race where Kimi and the late Petrov will participate in too?

I see both Pic and Raikkonen took to the podium. A Russian won though.

I think it'll more likely be the EU laws that will stop it first

That might be allowed through, as you can't see the whole of the Marlboro only the Marl ... a racing fan knows what it is but they could argue he's just a big fan of Bob Marley. Though we may be into the whole Buzzin´Hornets territory then ... Ducati have seemed to get away with pretty blatant Marlboro sponsorship in MotoGP recently.

Cool helmet though. Incidentally, the Caterham looks woeful and I wouldn't be at all surprised if they're beaten by Marussia this year. The Marussia doesn't look quick but it looks much less of a handful than the Caterham ...

First race where I can remember tarmac runoffs becoming trend was probably Brazil 2002.

Few places like Curva do Sol with Tarmac. A lot of tarmac runoffs in France and Germany too that year.

Why is that funny, or even worthy of posting?
