cota is one of those tracks where you enjoy more the town is located in than the race itself

According to the Montreal Journal both Toto Wolf and Lawrence Stroll are under investigation for insider trading.

here is the reddit link as article is in French and someone was kind enough to put translation in the comments there.

the ELI5: Toto bought AM shares prior to Mercedes buying AM shares. The question is if Toto knew Mercedes would be buying those shares. If so, insider trading which is illegal.

Would be fitting if they got a Capone'ish punishment after getting away with the pink Mercedes.

This is a legitimately huge story if there is any more than rumours in the evidence. If Toto were to go down for insider trading, I could see Mercedes pulling out of F1 to limit the damage.

Is Qatar a decent track for actual racing, despite looking so boring that it's usually raced at night?

no it's pretty bad except for MotoGP. I mean, it is a bike track.

At least it has real gravel traps and not painted run-off areas like Bahrain. I wish they would race in mid-day, like they did for years at Sakhir. Enough of consecutive night races.

It can't be worse than Yas Marina. Like said above, it is a track build for bikes. It won't be any different than Algarve, some of these sweeping bends never work for cars but if F1 finds at least one passing spot then it might not be a complete snoozer.

I don't mind F1 trying out these different tracks, but I would really like them to go back to Mugello, that seemed like such a success last year

I'd take a night race on those crappy boring middle eastern circuits any time over a horrible day race.

In theory the penalty for this in the UK is a huge fine and/or up to seven years in jail, but in reality the UK has historically been terrible at actually convicting people of it. More likely he would agree to stand down from the Mercedes position and they would try to ignore him as much as possible.

Insider trading usually doesn't result in actual jailtime, it will probably end up being a fine.

ah yeah rich people doing rich people stuff and getting away with it

Toto is quite an attention whore and got his first indictment for financial wrongdoings. He's doing quite well to become the next Bernie

One thing about Losail is that is does not have any chicanes, so should be decent enough for F1. That 3 apex corner out the back will be fun to watch.

So, according to that article, Wolff's AM shares are estimated to 36million (initial value when he bought them).

When you're that wealthy, surely money becomes secondary to other projects and achievements in life, doesn't it? I find it baffling that people as smart (supposedly) and successful as Wolff can still go meddling and fiddling around, risking to tarnish their reputation, position and achievements, for a few millions more?

Obviously it's still allegations in his case at this point, but he wouldn't be the first!
