He'd be beheaded in a 1991 Fondmetal.

Would he really have though? All cars pre-head restraints left the drivers heads (and sometimes shoulders) very exposed...

Martin Brundle would agree to this.

I take your Brundle and raise you Tom Coronel, which conforts me in the thought that Kartikheyan would have at least kept his head on his shoulders even in a pre-1996 car:

wasn't that also the race where someone crashed into the bridge and died?

Very nearly 2 deaths that day then.

It was Takashi Yokoyama, one of the most violent and horrific crashes imaginable. I've seen pics of the damage and Takashi after the crash, not pleasant viewing.

Yep, as mclaren2008 said Takashi Yokoyama had a very violent crash there on the same year. Very bizarre too. But alas, that belongs to another topic.

Narain is a lucky man.

I fear one thing. I guess we are all used to see drivers climbing out of their car without any injuries.
What would happen if we see a crash, live and uncut with the driver's head and helmet together rolling in the grass with the lifeless body in the car?
That would cause something very big to Formula 1 and their image. I guess they would consider ending the season and re-design the cars completely.
So, in my opinion, they should slowly start to bring in new innovations that protect the driver's head or just completely ignore it.

I'm of the opinion that sports-car is sports-car and F1 is F1. The drivers should live with the risks.

I think it's horrible when drivers are hurt, and safety is a good thing. But there is only so much that should be done. Should the cars go closed top in the name of safety? Well, that means we should encase the wheels too for safety. And maybe just put big bumpers around them.

When you start making such extreme changes in the name of safety then it loses a big part of its appeal.

Bumpers I would like to see in F1 cars. How awesome would it be seeing drivers intentionally pushing others out of the way.

It's a paradox really. Appeal comes from the risk, but if nobody dies/gets hurt once in a while to remind us of it, it just fades away.

That's why near-misses like Narain's crash are good, consequence-free reminders. Nothing is more enjoyable than a spectacular accident where the driver could have easily been killed, but walks away while the crowd is cheering in relief.

That vague, unfathomable possibility of death, is what keeps racing thrilling to watch. And frankly, when a single car is running around a modern track, it doesn't exist. So I'm thankful that race conditions sunday have proven that during the race, even in the middle of an ocean of tarmac, it is still dangerous.

Did Rosberg mention any injuries?

He had a rough landing AND he hit the barriers pretty heavily.

On his video blog, he said that landing was rather soft. So he's alright from what he said

I was thinking more of a Bristol-like move than some desperate move to win a title.
