I don't know how the injuries compare, but Olympian James Cracknell suffered a serious injury and he and his wife wrote a pretty good account of the aftermath: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/column ... -were.html

On two different occasions I have visited co-workers in the hospital who were in a touch-and-go head injury situation (dirt bike racing, wearing helmets of course) for the first 24 hours. Neither had to have any holes drilled into their skulls and both survived, but they were never the same person again.

Check the article posted by phil. Gives a good account of how drastic personalities change after brain injury.

Still doesn't necessarily mean it will be as bad for Michael.

I can think of a few examples - Richard Hammond developed a taste for celery, Mika Hakkinen lost his hearing in one ear, Harry Redknapp lost his sense of smell

In some cases, people who wake up from comas start speaking languages they never spoke.
And Hammond also didn't recognize his wife at first, thinking he had a French one.

Look up Hammond meets Moss. They talk a lot about the aftermath of severe head injuries.

Wow, I've been without internet for a few days and come back to this. Thoughts and prayers go out to the Schumacher family. Terrible news.

I'm no expert but I thought someone else might have a little more insight into this - but how do MSC's injuries & recovery procedures compare with Da Matta's? As I recall he also suffered a subdural hematoma AFAIK and needed immediate surgery after lapsing into a coma.

It's difficult to tell because they haven't revealed the exact nature of the haematoma, but I get the feeling they are quite similar injuries, at least in the broad sense - every head injury of this nature is different, though

Worth bearing in mind that Da Matta remained in an induced coma for about a week, intensive care for 17 days, and hospital for a further month after that - and that was considered remarkable progress
