it'll only be a success if sprint races could lead to more retirements in the race itself, with huge engine kabooms like in the old days

If only they had the balls to do a reverse grid. Even if it was for the top 10

Yeah while I rather enjoyed that, I couldn't help but imagine how much more spicy it would've been with a reverse grid of Friday qualifying results.
At the end of the day we watch for the racing action, and not boring practice sessions. So if this format means more racing on air and less practice time, I'd be all for it. Even if there's bound to be some tracks where the sprint will end up being a dull procession based on the layout.

I applaud F1 and it's fans at the track that get to see more "racing". More could have been done if you want a different race outcome, but I don't think that was the goal here from Formula 1 pov.

I do like that F1 tries new things to get more action, but for me the fastest car should be on pole and that is like since beginning in 1950.
So why change that, if it wasnt for Alonsos super start today it would have been dull.
But my hope really rests on the 2022 car to get more action.

What the deuce?

Have they already conducted a survey? Or do they base their assumption of the success on cheering fans, because, you know, fans tend to cheer automatically whenever they see a glimpse of an f1 car. And who are these fans on social media giving feedback? Not from TBK or Autosport forums I bet. Jesus Christ. :slaphead:

I'm willing to see this format in Monaco and Singapore. We want a huge scramble

Racing Etiquette-Weaving Thread

CUT THAT OUT RIGHT NOW

Seriously Max and Alonso should've had a black/white flag (remember that?) to get them to stop their shit trying to break the tow

Should come under the blanket "one move" rules, but tbh Alonso was weaving about 3 times per straight early on

Anyway that race was made by Alonso putting on the softs. Without that to watch, it would've been a complete parade.

If they want to persist with this (and it seems they do...) they have to do something that means some kind of ultra super-duper hyper soft tyre that goes off after about 8 laps and let them deal with it.

Nice race, but honestly would prefer we stick for racing only on sundays. It just makes the main race way less special. But wouldn't mind still have some 3 weekends with it every year to shake things up.

or make them race with DRS on at all times, even on corners to increase difficulty

It's obvious propaganda bullshit. They couldn't wait even one day to announce how "successful" this idea was. This obviously suggests the feedback is a total baloney  Racing die-hards like TBK don't mean a thing to them. It's like Jake Paul in boxing. All about money and propaganda and social media followers. It's not about boxing whatsoever.

It isn't statistically relevant, but saw Hulk making a poll on Instagram and some 75% voting it was a good thing and a Aston Martin post on Linkedin asking about it and people were praising it in general. It does look like it was well received in general.

Perez dropping out, Sainz fighting back, a lead change, and Alonso moving up. Wasn't crazy with close fighting all around, but it had just enough of what you'd ask from this sort of sprint qualy. It was better than many past feature races including at this very track.

Let's not forget that:

- This race replaced FP3. Who here seriously prefers watching an FP, compared to what happened yesterday?

- Next year, we will have cars that can follow each other closer. Sprint can become wild.

As someone said they should probably not generalise it, but do it a few times a year at some venues.

Sprint race only works if serious points are for grab. Say what you want about Lewis but he isn’t dumb. At this point in the championship he won’t risk it for 1 lousy point if one of the outcomes is having to start the Sunday race from the back and around mazepin.

A lot of the comments on social media were critical of it, so I'm not sure where all the positivity is coming from. It could be better with a few tweaks, but I'm still not keen on it.

One positive from yesterday was the tyres looking worn during the race. It's going to be hot today and the cars will be much heavier on full tanks. Surely a two stop race at least, with some varying tyre strategies? Or teams pushing the limits, tyres failing, and Pirelli bringing the hardest tyres everywhere for the rest of the season...

I didn't hate it, but I also didn't love it. I would make 1 change at the moment. Have the top 5 from qualifying sit out the race. They are locked in after qualifying. Make the other 15 drivers race for positions 5 to 20 on the Sunday grid. So pole position on Friday stays pole position for Sunday. And we see a much closer race at the front.

If they want the sprint to last longer than one season, it can't be run everywhere. We don't need gimmicks in the top series.

I still don't know how having the grid settled by a sprint race rather than quali conditions doesn anything other than make the main race more predictable. Quali in any format has always had an element of unpredictability and a chance to see someone at the top who's not outright fastest across a race distance. Use a race to set the grid and you'll normalise the irregularities and remove most of that random factor. The only things that could shake results up a bit are mechanical failures and wrecks; the former basically don't exist in F1 anymore and the for the latter to happen someone would need to be motivated to take an extraordinarily risk for pretty much no reward. If they run it in only 3 events per year you'd have to assume the feature race in those events will be less exciting than it might otherwise be.

I don't think cars that follow closely solves that, I think they need to provide more motivation for the whole field (points for more than the top 3), run the sprint race with an inverse top-10, and have quali still set the grid for the main race. That would actually have a positive effect on the show and give Ross the 3 day ratings he wants.
