I am so happy that Button stays. I don't have much against Magnussen, but put him in GP2 for a year to see if he is better than Stoffel if not. Then McLaren can pick again in 2016 when Button "goes in grace".

Maybe they did buy Caterham or at least fund it a lot so they can put Magnussen and van Doorne in the cars.

Is it me or do McLaren seem to have no real plan? It's like they're just making it up as they go along. Hire Perez, kick him out after one season. Hire Magnussen, kick him out after one season. Now they've got a driver whose career is clearly running on fumes, and it's not like Alonso's going to be around for that much longer either. I really hope it comes back to bite them in the arse in 2 or 3 years, because I think the way they're treating their young drivers is a bloody joke.

Hopefully the cars in the back are also a hint at the new paintjob.

Was surprised to not see a current car in there at first but then I realized it's all Honda powered cars.

I've been saying for a few weeks that this may not have been of McLaren's making. We're all assuming it is but the simple fact that is known, is that Alonso wanted Button as his team mate whereas McLaren wanted Magnussen. This situation could have been created by Alonso who wouldn't sign until his conditions were met. Vague similarities to Senna joining Lotus in 1985 in that respect.

Fine, tell Fernando to stick it. Unless Honda are desperate for Fernando, they wouldn't have let that happen. McLaren and Ron are the people who ended up arguing with Senna about something silly like £20,000.

The fuss over drivers is unusual for McLaren, who tend to be very quick and hard headed with decisions. So I suspect Honda were involved in this.

Magnussen can't race in GP2 because he's done a full season in F1.

Plus they already put him against Vandoorne in WSBR last year & Magnussen beat him to the championship.

in 2013 Magnussen was in his second year in World series by Renault, Vandoorne was in his first. Magnussen only finished seventh in his first season 2012, Vandoorne finished second in his first season. Vandoorne also finished second in his first GP2 season, so I'd say Vandoorne is better than Magnussen.

That picture is so awkward, I just had to make it my avatar.
Fernando looks boss though 8)
Button and Alonso will probably the strongest teammates next year. I expect Button to lead the team for the first races, then Alonso should be able to beat him usually.

Why can't Magnussen race in IndyCar or Super Formula? They did that sort of thing back in the 90's to great effect.

Is that a rule? There's been multiple drivers who've competed in GP2 after doing a season in F1. Bruni, Pizzonia and Pantano for example.

Well Maldonado was GP2 Champion, so I'd say he's better than both Vandoorne and Magnussen

Maldonado has even won an F1 race, making him better than figures such as Martin Brundle, Nick Heidfeld, Alex Zanardi and Truls1.

He's pretty much an F1 legend, basically.

- Last driver to score points for Lotus
- Last driver to win a race for Williams
- Last driver to win a race for the Renault partnership with Williams

I mean, that tops all the achievements amassed by the previous drivers including Prost, Mansell, Hill, Villeneuve and even Senna, De Angelis, Clark and Hill.

:tumble:
