Agreed with all of that. Enjoyed reading this on Villeneuve's career recently (although it's an old article): http://f1rejects.com/centrale/villeneuve/index.html

This is probably something to discuss in another thread but I get the feeling that the one-time champions always end up being underrated for some reason. I've just finished writing something on Jody Scheckter - his results through the 1970s were consistently excellent in mediocre cars and yet he's always cast as "the one who beat Villeneuve by being consistent rather than fast" or "the wild one who calmed down"

I think in Villeneuve's case the problem is that besides 96 and 97 he didn't really deliver but his words are as if he was the guy to beat all those years he ran F1 and still is the guy to beat.

To a point lots of fans like such arrogance but at one point actions speak louder than words so every time he opens his mouth people are like "yeah yeah...whatever..." because they look at his post 97 results and those don't match up to his words.

Some one time champions generally ARE one time champions only because everything aligned, not because they were the best on the grid. Damon in 1996 - he just got lucky. Coulthard was better than him many times in 95, but the car cost him many wins (Spa, Argentina, Monza for example). So he gets shipped off to a slower McLaren, and in comes a rookie team mate who hasn't even grew up with the European way of motorsport. Schumacher goes off to Ferrari for an adventure, and the first season is a disaster. Damon should've walked 1996. The team mate who was giving him a hard time was gone. Schumacher was out of the picture. His new team mate is a rookie. Yet it still went down to the wire.

Had DC been in the seat in 96, I doubt Hill would've won the title. Had the Ferrari not been one of the worst Ferraris ever made, Hill would've struggled more.

He drove very well in the initial years of BAR, even in 1999. He was still one of the best drivers on the grid. The problem is BAR didn't make any more progress and, as the article explains, he didn't galvanise the team in the way he should have, and when Button and Richards came in and Pollock went out, suddenly he was the outsider in the team

I suppose the problem is similar to Alesi - Jacques was a very talented driver but he alienated too many people to make a long-term success of it. It was almost as if it was too easy for him initially, by jumping straight in the Williams - there are parallels to be drawn with Lewis here, though it's still relatively early in his career to see if he follows the same path

yeah, together with Van De Poele's retirement in Imola 1991 in the last lap, this is one of my saddest memories in the +25 years of watching F1 (apart from Imola 1994 off course).

Certainly I wouldn't have chosen or run it. I know Matt Neal did for the 1993 BTCC season but after suffering an awful start to that season changed numbers, and promptly became Independent Champion.
