So when people say it was better in the old days they aren't wearing rose-tinted spectacles, they're just right.

Strange how it's (generally) gradually gone down every year though. You'd expect there to be more of a sudden drop whenever new regs were brought in.

There were major regulation changes in 1989, 1994, 1998, 2003, 2006 and 2009.

Interesting that in those years there were either massive increases or massive decreases in passing. The regulations for this year really backfired because of the defuser debacle.

I find that astonishing, because i can barely watch a typical old race without being bored to tears.

What i also find remarkable is how much was done during 02 and 04, seasons i thought were awful (relative to other seasons in the last 10 years - since ive been watching)

The fact that most 80's races are so boring is because the directing was terrible. They just focused on a drivr or 2, not switching cameras to catch the various battles. Still happens nowadays, although less.

And i thought 02 and 04 were brilliant seasons.

In 04 the racing behind the Ferraris was decent, but 02? I struggle to comprehend how anyone could consider that a brilliant season.

Same reason you mentioned for 04.

I don't remember any decent racing behind the Ferraris. And still, you couldn't call 2004 'brilliant' either, it was still a poor season on the whole, just not as poor as 2002.

The first three races in 2002 were actually very good...(despite some despicable penalties and then lack of penalties...) especially Melbourne...

Silverstone was wet, Hockenhiem had the Montoya/Kimi duel (for a bit... lol ), Austria was a good race (as was every race there..) and France had the Kimi/Micheal duel that was quite cool

Of course, I look back to 2002 far more fondly than 2004 because I had Bernievision that led to seeing every little battle that took place on the track, no matter where it was.
After that, it was just world feed and everything seemed a bit less exciting.

A heck of a lot of races from the 1980s and early 90s are actually processional and pretty damn dull.

Just that half the F1 fans on this board expect an F1 fans on this board seem to expect F BMW-esque racing every week. Ain't going to happen.

You've also got to remember that we've got less cars on the grid now and have done so since the late nineties. Having less cars impacts the overall stats.

Interesting, but keep in mind that passes are more intense now than in the past, generally speaking.

Many of the moves in the 80s consisted in passing by on a straight, at acceleration or during braking. Nowadays, cars are so close in performance and braking so powerful that it's more of side-by-side, challenging battles through corners.
Quality and intensity, with a better TV directing, makes up a little for the decrease in quantity.

So began an Autosport report from...........1982.

A season that has now achieved almost legendary status.

The drivers were far more interesting, the tracks were far more interesting, but the actual racing generally wasn't.

compared to the other races of the season. A race from 1982 will be boring in 1982, but crazy and great compared to a 2009 race

Not really. The rose tinted glasses just make it seem that way. People remember it as better than it was.

Exactly. Watching the two hours of FIA Season review is already getting boring, so the whole season must have been a real borefest. Some interesting events happened here and there, but generally there wasn't too much of action through the whole season.

However, this can be said about almost every other season too.
