I am definitely skeptical. I hope they don't fuck it over though.

I don't really understand it either. You hear a lot of the complaints about pay TV from fans outside North America. Do you all not pay for TV normally? I mean, did you get all these races on free over the air broadcasts before?

It's always a strange argument to me since we've been paying for cable TV, well, forever it seems.

and even then, they still show all of the V8SC races that are on cable in a highlights package for free-to-air the night of/after the race.

No, a lot of people don't pay for TV, and the amount that do is rapidly declining. It is old hat. Apart from some sports, there is no reason to subscribe to the pay channels. The v8 Supercars and their predecessors have been broadcast on the major free to air networks for decades.

As for the re-airs, they are on late at night, with no advertising (compared to the heavy advertising when the V8's where on the free to air networks). If you're not a pay TV subscriber, then it's also unlikely that you have any kind of HD/Tivo system to record your TV.

Foxtel made a big play to get the V8's broadcasting rights, in the hope that it would lead to a major increase in subscriptions.

I don't know about what's happening in NZ, but looking it up now, here the most recent major research suggests that it isn't declining, in fact it's growing. Still, only somewhere between a third and a half of households in Australia have a subscription TV service, and even then only about three quarters of that market has Foxtel (and the rest of the market is mostly Netflix, which came on the market here about 4 or 5 months ago.)

NZ is different, the FTA networks were outbid by SKY on most major sporting events many years ago.

Well, you in NA have. According to surveys the portion of pay-tv subscribers is way higher in US than in Europe (I'd presume Australia/NZ are in this sense more similar to Europe), probably because mainstream cable pay-tv has existed in US for decades but in Europe pay-tv became more widely available only after the digital tv. Before that, especially if you had only terrestial tv, only option to get pay-tv was satellite. So, it is a consumer culture difference that is still changing and particularly sports have nearly vanished from FTA. Also, many European countries have large public broadcasting companies which also used to show more sports.

That's how it is generally, I don't even have a tv receiver anymore and my racing fix comes 100 percently from streams (I pay for some of it though, but it is still not traditional pay-tv).

File this in the "you don't see this every day" category:

http://www.speedcafe.com/2016/02/04/man-hospitalised-after-bathurst-lawn-mower-crash/

By the way, this year's edition of this event is coming up this weekend. Streams will be available for those outside of Australia and the race will be shown live first on 7Mate and later on Channel 7 in Australia, much like last year (I believe streams will also be available for Australians as well.)

I had planned to watch the last 2-3 hours but work came up. Anyone know if and when a highlights package will be aired on any TV channel in the hope it then shows up on RfM? Or a Youtube link to the whole race?

Next year's race is already looking like it's going to be a stormer:

Lowndes & Whincup have incidentally been confirmed alongside Toni Vilander, which will be interesting to watch:

Team Old should have the car painted up using this base scheme.
