14 races. 6 months of racing. It all comes down to the final 250 laps of the season at the worst NASCAR track ever. Will Will Power finally not choke and win his elusive first IndyCar Championship of his career? Or will Ryan Hunter-Reay gives the Yanks something they haven't seen in a long time: a North American open-wheeled champion from the United States? Only 17 points separate between the double-middle finger flipping Aussie and the Andretti Autosport driver that loves to complain at times (but not as much as a certain Andretti Autosport driver who isn't Canadian and doesn't have a shot at the title).

The first non-Indy 500 500 mile race since CART's last visit to Fontana in 2002. :)

I can't wait for this race. It has so much potential to be so great. I'm so curious to see what kind of speeds they will be posting. I want RHR for championship and Hinch for the oval (maybe kanaan if hinch has more engine problems). I seriously can not wait to see this race. 500 miles baby.

stolen from iRacing forum:

If Hunter-Reay wins, he needs Power needs to finish 4th or worse.
If Hunter-Reay gets 2nd, he needs Power needs to finish 9th or worse.
If Hunter-Reay gets 3rd, he needs Power needs to finish 12th or worse.
If Hunter-Reay gets 4th, he needs Power needs to finish15th or worse.
If Hunter-Reay gets 5th, he needs Power needs to finish 17th or worse.
If Hunter-Reay gets 6th, he needs Power needs to finish 25th or worse.
If Hunter Reay finishes worse than 7th, Power wins the Championship.

If Power finishes 4th or higher, he wins regardless of where RHR finishes.
If it goes to a tiebreak, Hunter-Reay wins because he has more wins (4 to Power's 3).

Allthough being the most boring track in NASCAR, Fontana was great for CART and I wonder if we get a repeat of the 2000 finale where everybody seemed to drop out bar the championship contenders. Any bets for the most DNFs this season? It's the last race, I suspect most if not all the teams will crank it up and just go for broke. Will HVM be parked inside the first 10 laps again or can Simona pull a King Hiro 1994 Michigan and get her best (oval) result on a day when nobody else finishes?

Jesus. What a lap. The close-up shot of the car 1:28 in (on one of his warmup laps!!) really shows just how fast he was going. And I love Paul Page's reaction to his lap!

"It didn't look that fast!" Haha, so what does look fast then?

That was a great lap from Gil.

Not many finishers in 2000 either: http://www.racing-reference.info/race/2 ... y_Toyota/R

It would be great to see Simona finish well.

But I don't think her speed will be the issue, rather the reliability of the engine.

I can't wait for this race though. It may be the best one of the year.

The shot from above at 1:35 always gives me the chills.

IIRC Paul Tracy said that they were reaching 255 mph at the backstraight in Fontana and Michigan

Gil won that championship for Penske, Greg surely would have been right up there as well

I'm afraid so. Why do they start so late?
