It'll be like any other driving school experience. I'd imagine they're slower then actual Indycars.

From what the guys are saying at TrackForum, the replicas are steel spaceframe chassis with single gearing and setup with alot of understeer so you lift under cornering and you don't spin out, and very straight forward to drive. Max speed 160mph.

But then again, although its hard to imagine what went badly wrong, you still wouldn't want to hit a wall at that speed at a horrible angle.

Going back on topic, some very intruiging news reported here regrading Howard and Rahal....

autoweek.com wrote:
IndyCar: Jay Howard to team with Graham Rahal for Indianapolis 500

Graham Rahal doesn’t yet have a team announced for the 2011 Izod IndyCar Series season, but he might have a teammate for the Indianapolis 500, at least according to Jay Howard. Howard said that he will race alongside Rahal in the 500, but the team or teams involved remain unknown.

“Maybe [that will become clear] in a couple of weeks,” Howard said. Both have Service Central as a sponsor. Rahal’s program is for the season; Howard’s is just for the 500.

Howard, the 2006 Firestone Indy Lights champion who ran five races with Sarah Fisher Racing this season, said he is excited about his 2011 program.

“I am signed up for the 500 with a very good team and a very good car,” he said. “I’m very, very happy with what’s going on there. If someone said to me . . . do you want to re-sign the way you were (at SFR), same deal, five races, or do you want this deal for one race, I’m definitely, all day long, going to choose this deal.”

If the two drivers are a package-deal for a team, that would seem to rule out either the Penske or Ganassi operations, which already have a full complement of drivers. The best guess is Andretti Autosport, which only has the programs of Marco Andretti and Danica Patrick nailed down, but several other teams could turn out to be Rahal’s and Howard’s new home.

However, another well-placed source told AutoWeek that Howard and Rahal will, in fact, not be teammates at Indy despite receiving backing from the same sponsor. Stay tuned.

They won't be teammates, they just have the same sponsor.

Oh I was assuming it was one of those 2-seater experience jobbies.
Do they really allow someone off the street loose on an oval in a replica? Something doesn't sound right there.

I've driven the "driving experience" before during the CART days. The answer is "yes", but like mentioned below its very scaled down. Back then, the cars also had a "maximum speed" of 160mph; in practice that meant 120mph laps or so (at Las Vegas). Single gear, of course. When I did it, you got a few hours of instruction before hand. Back then, you also follow an instructor car for your laps, and the instructor paces you up to speed. (Not sure if they do that now.)

It's slower than even an Atlantic car would be. It actually felt pretty comfortable to drive at that speed, probably due to the big downforce mentioned below. The tandem ride in a 2-seater car (with an SCCA guy driving) felt a lot faster, I think that was 170-180mph or so.

It would suck for things to go wrong, but I felt a lot safer in that than I did yesterday on my roof replacing a shingle.

Agreed.

Any other year, Alex Lloyd, or Baguette would have had a fighting chance of winning ROTW, however, Simona is Danica, just with more talent, less hypeand a better body

Nice little track and good crowd. Why don't they run it anymore?

Apparently the crowds were only modest (for CART), so race officials planned to move the race to downtown Manhattan, then canceled it for cost reasons. Weird. (source)

Latest rumour: Indycars have approached Calder Park about running an Indycar event, either on the Oval or Road Course.

Hasn't the oval been derelict for the last 10-15 years?
