Raw top speed isn't the focus of ROP, so you might be missing the point of it.

Don't worry, I know about the stages. I'm just curious about the speeds with the current package. Witch seems to be pretty okay.
Newgarden 213

What time does the race start? European time? Monaco and Indy on the same day, wow:) The race in Brasil was broadcasted live in the Netherlands, hope that it will be the same this time!

Brazil wasn't live on RTL7, they said it was but it was on a 1 hour delay. ;)

Will there be any streams for Indy practice? Rookie orientation is today but can't find a stream on the indycar site.

Didn't know that. At least it felt like it was live;)

Jakes and Newgarden passed the ROP and are good to go on the opening day.
Barichello passed stage I.

RTL wanted to show it live, and the race was supposed to start at 18:30 so coverage here in Holland started at 18:20.
But in Brazil they decided to start the race one hour earlier because of the weather forecast for the end of the race. RTL only had 2 options from there on, so they never got the chance to satisfy every one.

Option 1 was to start the coverage also one hour earlier. There weren't any important shows scheduled before the race so they could have done that. Result: many people who didn't know the race was starting one hour earlier would all tune in @ 18:20 and find out they missed the first half of the race! And they would all complain about RTL...

Option 2 was to start the coverage at the time it was supposed to start, 18:20. But nowadays many viewers watch it with live timing on their computer screen. These people soon found out that when the race started at RTL it was already past its halfway mark in real life. So again RTL got many complaints that they promised to show something live but instead they showed it 1 hour delayed.

So in my view option 2 was the better one because most dutch viewers didn't know the race started earlier so like Rudy didn't know it wasn't live at all. Most of them still believe it was live. If they had chosen option 1 they would have had far more complaints than they had now. And for those that complain that it wasn't live: just make sure you watch a good quality stream, there are plenty of them on the web, always sure it is live and you have some good commentary instead of Allard & co answering viewers questions instead of talking about the action on the track

Can't really blaim them for showing it delayed. You don't hear or read much about indycar here in the Netherlands, allmost nothing. Most people wouldn't have know about the early start.

And I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who is frustrated by the poor quality of our commentators. Allard Kalff can do much better than this. The other one, Winkelman(?), should not commentate at all.

Being serious, I think he was shaking the car down. I assume it's a brand-new chassis.

I wouldn't worry. It wasn't much more than a shakedown. I assume the have a brand new chassis alongside to the brand new engine and the brand new driver. He will get up to speed during the weekend.

Alesi will probably get within a couple of seconds a lap of the back of the field but I don't really see the point in this exercise, especially with Lotus being the massive fraudulent joke it's turned out to be. It almost seems as if Lotus are wheeling him out so that everyone will say "Oh look, it's Jean Alesi" and forget what a disaster their entire program has been.

Really hope Alesi's total lack of oval experience doesn't get him or someone else hurt. This isn't the place to start.

Quote:
Simon Pagenaud's first practice at Indianapolis Motor Speedway has ruffled a few feathers.

A bird apparently was sucked into the Frenchman's car and slammed into a screen around the radiator, damaging the part and killing the bird. It took about 30 minutes for crew members to fix the car so they could get Pagenaud back on track for the rookie orientation program for the Indianapolis 500 this month.

Another bird apparently escaped the same fate.

"I heard about it," Pagenaud said after turning 93 laps, the fastest being 214.055 mph (344.47 km/h). "I saw the birds, but I didn't know one of them hit it. I didn't even know it was in the car. I just thought they flew away."

Pagenaud was the first driver on the historic 4km oval, spending the day learning how to deal with the track's tricky corners and gusty winds.

IndyCars are sensitive to all things; weather, bumps, trash from the crowds, even natural obstacles like water and, well, animals. While track officials routinely stop cars for track inspections and to clear debris, animals sometimes move too quickly to do anything about it.

According to track historian Donald Davidson, the best-known incident occurred when Bobby Unser hit a bird during a 1971 qualifying attempt. Now after just one day on the track, Pagenaud has passed his rookie test and joined Unser, a three-time 500 winner, on that ignominious list.

"When I came in, they told me a bird was in the car," Pagenaud said. "I thought it just went away somewhere. Usually you feel it when you hit something, but I didn't even feel it."

Pagenaud has had a spectacular start to the season. He's finished in the top six three times, including a season-best second at Long Beach, and he's fifth in points after four races.

Ten drivers had the option of driving on the Thursday session.

Jay Penske's two drivers, English rookie Katherine Legge and French veteran Sebastien Bourdais, did not make it onto the track as they search for new engines. Six drivers completed all three phases of their rookie test.

Former Freedom 100 winner Wade Cunningham of New Zealand completed the first two phases of his test and started the third phase but did not have time to finish.

Practice for all drivers begins on Saturday, local time. The 500 is scheduled to be run on May 27.
