Bird blocked Cecotto - unintentionally, but it happens - around T5/6 and was rightly penalised three places. Bird moves over exiting T6, Cecotto deliberately moves across on him, gestures and forces him onto the grass.

I know you laughed at me last year, but one of these days something to do with the GP2/GP3 boys will result in a fatality unless they calm down.

Cecotto's move was just staggering. There's no place for it on the race track. Yet even after being thrown out of qualifying, he's still not accepting blame for it (on Twitter). So he hasn't learned his lesson, has he?

I know we don't live in a perfect world - if we did, the best 26 young guys would be in GP2 and they're no - but just having a little bit more sense would be nice.

I don't remember people laughing at you because you are spot on. Something has to give before these kids will sit up and take notice.

But while we debate the standards of driving in these junior formulas lets remind ourselves that lessons need to be taught from the top down.

Here's a couple of (maybe rather extreme) examples of correct punishment not helping the cause...

Quote:
1988 Spanish GP
During qualifying, F1's most experienced driver of the time Riccardo Patrese, was on his hot lap when the slower Julian Bailey (who was heading for the pits) got on the wrong side of the track and Patrese had to slow down considerably to avoid hitting Bailey, ruining his fast lap. A furious Patrese retaliated by getting in front of Bailey and brake testing his Tyrrell, the subsequent collision sending Bailey's car into the air and off the track into the gravel trap. Officials at first blamed Bailey and also called his Tyrrell team mate Jonathon Palmer to the hearing for good measure on the premise that the slower than most Tyrrell's were generally a menace and both drivers needed to be told. However, officials later reviewed the incident again and Patrese was fined $10,000 for his actions, although most in the Formula One paddock argued that Patrese's fine was not enough, and that he should also pay the Tyrrell team to fix the damages on the Tyrrell 017 and the general feeling was that Patrese, Grand Prix racing's most experienced driver of the day, should have faced a harsher penalty. One unnamed driver was quoted as saying "I hope they fine him his bloody retainer. There are enough accidental shunts in this business without people actually trying to cause them....."

To this day I'm still stunned at the decision to allow Mika to keep that pole winning lap. Yellow flag infringement aside, it was a great lap though.

IIRC the two of you had a massive set-to after Suranovich's twattery at Monaco.

Yeah, I know he's mad and I don't care. I do not care. I did not care then. I do not care now. I'm here to race him.

We did, but water under the bridge and all that.

I just don't know what it'll take. Most drivers accept their mistakes. He hasn't.

The problem is, like compatriot Maldonado, he has the pace to justify his mistakes. If he was slow and erratic he'd change his style. But the fact he's won a few races means that to him, he's doing it right.

The laughable side of it is he did it at the first round of the season on an extremely wide circuit. Not exactly difficult to overtake.

When something does happen, everyone will look back and wonder why more wasn't done.

---

On a completely different note, some of the guys in GP2 this year. Christ they're uninspiring.

Correct, but that was more to do with a differing opinion on fault rather than quality / standard of driving.

I remember Mansell having a swerve at somebody after being blocked on a qualifying lap as well. Emotions obviously very high, but no excuse for that.

Remember the Formula...Master? (was it called that?) race at Monza?

Basically a whole race of this.

Yvan Muller has made a career of it too! :p
