Gary Hartstein ‏@f1doc
For obvious reasons I can't comment on anybody's condition. Busy day, typical of spa. Always learning from what we do think how to do better. But we can all sleep ok tonight.

What are the other (no fatal) occasions that medical helicopter has left the circuit, and if so, were there similar long breaks?

Outside of F1, WTCC continued racing when the helicopter took Surtees to hospital at Brands Hatch a couple of years ago, they put the race under SC whilst the helicopter took off, but they didn't wait till it was back to get racing again. Can't imagine a WTCC event would have 2 helicopters if F1 doesn't, strange how there's different standards.

About the helicopter, I don't think it was because of the severity of the injuries, but more because there are works on the highway towards Liège and they probably didn't want to put an ambulance through the little roads, it would be more safe to go with the helicopter.

Asked Gary Hartstein about the whole gravel, especially at Pouhon. He said "Don't know-Charlie is expert on this, and also uses input from lots of smart guys. Eau Rouge is TONS safer than even a few years ago"

I remember three times where driver was banned for sprint race due to incident in feature race. Can't find one incident but here are other two.

It's really not safer. The asphalt only works when you got room for tons and tons of runoff. Then the car will simply slid to a stop because there is nothing to hit. But when there is no runoff or when it's raining it's very dangerous. Just look at the Cecotto crash on Friday, that was a big hit. Normally the gravel would have done its job.

We've had huge crashes on the Raidillon, at Blanchimont, coming out of Pouhon, down at Les Fagnes, coming out of Stavelot. We even had cars leaving the track or going into the catchfence. Sure, drivers have less of a challenge with the asphalt and can get away with much more. Rivage is a bit of a joke now with cars locking up wheels every lap coz there is no penalty. But when you have a big off you can also get a big hit.

Some progressively thicker gravel where the guy went off at the top of Eau Rouge today would have meant a significantly lower impact speed.

And the chap in the GP3 race would have certainly scrubbed speed off with gravel there.

It depends whether you're more concerned about a nasty impact with a "thick" tyre wall or flipping an open-cockpit car.

But flips in gravel traps aren't that common? It really depends how the gravel trap is laid down.
