Can someone explain why it's acceptable to have people standing in the middle of the inside wall along the front straight? I don't really feel comfortable watching a human body explode when it get's nailed by a wheel or something.

Something that gets mentioned every year. Unfortunately it probably won't change until something along the lines of what you said actually happens.
