My thoughts exactly

Quote:
The internationally rated track is destined to host the fourth round of this year's A1GP competition on January 25.

It will be the third and final year of Taupo's contract with A1GP organisers.

Taupo Motorsport Park manager David Steele said track officials were keen to continue holding the race meeting when the present contract arrangements ended in January.

"We'd like to secure an early November date for the 2009-10 series possibly slotted in two weeks after the Gold Coast round."

Gold Coast has been chosen to host an A1GP round for the first time in the 2009-10 series.

If successful, it would mean Taupo would host two A1GPs within 12 months, a big coup for the track, and for Taupo.

"We're very keen to see it happen and will be doing everything we can to get the race back to Taupo."

The first two A1GP races in 2007 and 2008 were estimated to have added $70 million each to the local economy, although the privately owned track itself is in debt.

Mr Steele said much would depend on the public supporting the January 25 A1GP meeting.

"If we can get a capacity 30,000 crowd to the January race and show the A1GP organisers we support the race, we will have a better chance of getting host rights to the following series in 2009."

Mr Steele said a November date would better suit Taupo.

It would be outside the main holiday season and would not conflict with other activities on a busy tourist calendar.

Mr Steele said dust that had been a problem on the track in previous years had been overcome after extensive regrassing of the track infield.

oh that's pretty cool, I know Earl was offered the Taupo drive but he'll be testing a Mercedes DTM car around the time, he's already tested one but wrote it off after a tyre failure  . Jonny Reid's going to be racing in the Porsche GT3 cup at the Taupo round in a couple of endurance races they are having  but rumor has it that he 'might' get the A1 drive.

Chris van der Drift will drive.

Yea, it's been confirmed now, I did know he was going to get it for the past month or so but apparently Chris has been a bit :yuk: with everyone so there was a slim chance Jonny would have got it.

He would have been probably a better choice, but he got no experience in the new car. And I think they want to look good at home soil.

Apparently there was quite a big push behind the scene's to get Jonny in the car, because he's quite a star here, no one's heard of Chris before, so hopefully he'll do well and get his name out there.

Brands Hatch might have something to say about this, don't they specifically promote the A1GP round there as the "Series finale??" :?

Is A1GP big in Brazil? Would be great to have a finale with packed grandstands in the background.

If Rubens Barrichello or Felipe Massa race, it'll be full that's for sure.

Absolutely not.

That's the sad part. The series is barely commented here. In fact, it has to do with the poor TV coverage. No races shown live, few advertisement about its broadcasting, when it happens.

It's curious also the fact that I haven't read absolutely nothing about it at any Brazilian notorious source.

Anyway, I heard some rumours that as the TV coverage provided by RedeTV! was so poor (eg.: I heard some complaints Chengdu race was not shown), it was decided that the broadcasting rights are going to another channel - SBT.

If the new channel, which is quite strong at São Paulo, makes a good campaign, we can have some people in the grandstands. But sincerely, if I use the fingers of my two hands to count people there, I'll be surprised.
