And once again there's a typhoon on the way

There should be a Venn diagram of "amount of Japan pre-race threads where typhoons are predicted" and "amount of races that are even wet, let alone are affected by a typhoon" where there's two circles that barely touch

Jesus wept, every year....

You can be fairly confident that there will be some disruption to the weekend as a result of this typhoon. At least some of Saturday will be washed out at the very least, and depending on how close the centre of Hagibis gets to Mie Prefecture there could be some rather significant wind damage as well.

For comparison, the centre of Ma-On (the 2004 typhoon) really didn't get super close to the circuit and yet it was easy to justify the cancellation of all the Saturday activity (Mie is at the heel of the inlet that looks like an upturned boot on the southern coast - Suzuka itself is a little further west along the 'sole');

Sunday looks ok, so no rain on raceday. Mercedes 1-2

It's still fairly early to predict when it will arrive. It could cancel the Sunday activity. What happens then?

I guess it happens like when it happened at MotoGP at Silverstone last year. All canceled and see you next year

I guess there's a small chance they might try racing very early on the Monday to hit the european Sunday night slot (not sure exactly what time that'd have to be), otherwise yeah, that'll be your lot.

For that they must be very early, would be a nightmare for drivers and teams haha

Was there any case of a Sunday wash-out in F1?

Anyway, nice video about the different Layout proposals for this track. Specially the first iteration, with 3 crossovers.

Stop talking about wash outs, the tyfoon will be long gone by Sunday. I don't even expect Saturday to be cancelled unless the wind is too heavy.

Only problem could be wind damage to structures at the track.

Current official forecast from the JWTC has the circuit just within the 50-knot wind radii at 6Z on Saturday (exactly when qualifying is supposed to take place). That would be sustained winds of just under 60mph.

The official forecast somewhat matches the GFS model output, with the centre of Hagibis making landfall directly on Tokyo. However, the European and Canadian models both have Hagibis making landfall further to the west and closer to the circuit. 10 miles either way can make a significant difference.

Closest example would be when the 1985 Belgian Grand Prix at Spa was cancelled due to the track breaking up. Luckily they managed to reschedule it - not a luxury the Japanese have with it being so late in the year. There was also Bahrain 2011 which was cancelled about a week before iirc

1979 Race of Champions at Brands Hatch was moved from March 18th to April 15th (Easter Sunday) due to snow :p

Expect Saturday to be cancelled, I was wrong before. Can't organise a major event when the eye of a hurricane is 200km away

I read somewhere they can postpone the race until Monday if neccessary?
